Saint Peakaun's Church - Toureen |
The monastery of St. Peakaun's - Toureen, is located in flat terrain, at the base of a steep east facing slope, with Peakaun Stream 36m to the east, and was founded in the mid 7th century by Beccán, who was a highly regarded ascetic, one of the select group to whom Pope Cummian addressed his famous letter advocating adherence to the Roman Easter. The small Romanesque church was taken into state care in 1935 and archaeology attests to its importance, with the inscription on the west cross been dated to 700 AD, making it the earliest dated High Cross in Ireland or Britain. The site also features one of the largest Insular collections of 7th / 8th century inscribed slabs, most of which were inserted into the fabric of the church. The site also includes a 9th century Sundial, a monk's cell and what is |
