CARROWNASEER TAU CROSS
LOCATION
Co-ordinates:- 53 38' 36.793"N...8 43' 40.129"W
This Tau Cross ( a t-shaped monument, carved from a single piece of limestone ) is located 30m
south of a bullaun stone at Carrownaseer in the now disused burial ground. It is embedded in the soil,
with only the two extending arms clearly visible. The tau cross is a very early Christian symbol and is
usually considered as the symbol of Franciscan orders as St. Francis used the Tau in his writings,
painted in on the walls and doors of the places where he stayed, and used it as his only signature on
his writings.
