MULLAGH OGHAM STONE
This ogham stone was found in the old grave yard of Mullagh, county Cavan and is
now on display in the Heritage Centre in the village. It measures 0.64m in height,0.27m
in width,0.11m in depth and is composed of limestone. The stone has been fractured at
the top so not all of the inscription remains. What does remain reads " OSBBAR " and
was dated by Ziegler to 550 - 900 AD. The Heritage Centre is dedicated to St.Kilian of
Mullagh, an early Irish missionary monk who was born in the town-land in 640 AD and
travelled northern Europe, especially Germany, where in 689 AD he was martyred.
The stone is on display in the Heritage Centre
which is opposite the church.
