BALLYNAHOWN WEDGE TOMB |
This fine example of a small wedge tomb is located near the head of a small valley on the south side of the Beara peninsula and overlooking Bantry Bay. It is sign-posted from the road and a trail leads you straight to the tomb. The tomb is a wedge-shaped gallery & 3m in length, 1.5m in width at the west end, 1m at the east end and is aligned ENE-WSW. There are two side-stones supporting the single roof stone and this represents its east end. The two low overlapping stones, set in line with the north side stone, indicate that the gallery extended to the west. The roofed portion decreases in height from west to east and the tomb is incorporated into a low mound, 10.5m by 7.5m. The tomb has fantastic views to the south, west and limited views north and east due to the mountains. |
