KILMAINHAMWOOD HOLED STONE, COUNTY MEATH
This holed stone, marked on the OSI as ‘Burial Ground’ & on the Historic map as ‘St.
John the Baptist’s Church’, is located in the old graveyard of the said church, on a
high drumlin which overlooks the Kilmainham River (Abhainn Chill Mhaighnoann) to
the south & south of the town of Kings court (Dun an Ri) County Cavan, west of the
R162. The stone has a rectangular hole at the top, 0.10m in diameter, and a well carved
ringed cross in raised relief below. It measures 1.06m in height, 0.44m in width & 0.17
m in depth. It is unclear the relationship between the hole in the stone & the cross. The
cross may have been added to the earlier Bronze age monolith, to Christianise the site.
