BAUNOGENASRAID LINKARDSTOWN TOMB CO.CARLOW |
This National Monument is marked on the OS maps as a Tumulus but it is a type of passage tomb known as a Linkardstown tomb. The circumference of the cairn is about 40m and it seems to have a east-west alignment with the entrance on the eastern side. There is a lot of disturbance of the cairn on the western side but this is most likely from unauthorized digging. The kerb stones are only 1m in height, none showing any decoration, and are all in place except for the disturbed portion, where they have been moved about 2m from the cairn. In some places, especially on the north and south sides of the tomb, there seems to by an outer walling about 1m from the kerb stones and running around to the entrance, where they meet at two small trees, giving the appearance of a court. It is impossible to gain access to the chamber as the whole cairn is covered with thick thorn bushes but with a little work this could be a fantastic monument for an archaeological investigation. |
