From Macroom take the R618 east.Turm immediately left until you reach the cross
roads at Carrigaclodig.Turn left here and through the next cross roads. At the fork
in the road turn right and the next fork turn left. Then take the next right and then
the next left. You will come to two farms on the left and after the second farm there
is a track off the road on the left. Park here and the tomb is due west on the top of
the slope,visible on the skyline.
KILBERRIHERT WEDGE TOMB CO.CORK
|
This great example of a wedge tomb is located NE of Macroom, county Cork, on the southern slopes of the
Burren mountain, on a level ridge in the Boggaragh Mountain range. The tomb consists of two roof slabs, a small
slab at the front with the larger lying on top of it by 0.20m but these have slipped to the NW of the tomb, several
orthostats making up the interior walls, a backstone and 4 large boulders on each side that maks up the outer-
walling. Inside the tomb is a large chamber with a portico which measures 5m in total length and smaller stones
from the inner wall-fill. The entrance is 1.5m in width and 0.60m in height, tapering gradually towards the back
to 1m in width and 0.40m in height. The entire tomb in 7m in length and 3.5m in width and what remains of the
cairn can be seen around the perimeter of the tomb. The orientation is the normal NE - SW for wedge tombs and
it also seems to be in direct alignment to the summits of Burren mountain and the hill of Copper's Rock to the
south. Access is from a farm track that leads off a side road but the side roads in this area are very confusing so
Sat-Nav or hand held GPS is essential. Below are the best directions to the tomb for me.
