AILLEMORE COURT TOMB COUNTY MAYO |
This fantastic Court Tomb, marked on the Historic and OS maps as 'Cromlech', is located on a steep, east facing slope, on the north-eastern fringe of the Mweelrea Mountain Range, overlooking the Bunleemshough River valley to the east. The tomb, orientated WNW - ESE, consists of a large gallery, 3.2m in length and 2m in width, opening out into a half-court, and 3m across to the south. The north arm of the court is now perpendicular to the gallery but may have originally been the same as the south arm because the tomb was used as a cow-shed in the late 19th century up until relatively recently. The entrance to the 1st chamber, 1.7m in length and 1.5m in width, is marked by two erect jamb stones, with a low sill stone lying across the entrance. The 2nd chamber, 1.5m in length and 1.9m in width at the back, also has a low sill stone across the entrance to the chamber. There appear to be broken |
