DIRECTIONS
From Drimoleague drive west on the R586 until the junction with the R594. Just after this junction, take
the right turn and continue to the next crossroads. Turn right here and passed two left turns, taking the third left
turn. Continue on this narrow track for about 500m, past a farm house on the right, over a slight hill and down a
dip. There is a large field gate to park on the left and the tomb is 200m west from here.
KEALANINE WEDGE TOMB COUNTY CORK
|
This unusual wedge tomb was extensively excavated in the 1960' and is located on a north facing shoulder of
a rocky ridge. The wedge-shaped gallery measures 3.7m in length, 1.1m in width at east and unusually for a
wedge tomb is aligned east - west with the west end incorporated into a field fence. The north and south sides
are each formed of three stones, decreasing in height from west to east. The inset back-stone is at the east end
and tomb is covered by two roof stones, the west of which has fallen into the chamber. The field fence, which
contains the west end, shows some stones which maybe from a facade and the north side of the tomb falls off
sharply to the valley below. There is no indication of any cairn mound present.
