LEITRIM PORTAL TOMB COUNTY TYRONE |
Marked on the maps as the 'Druid's Altar' this portal tomb is located in a flat valley with Leitrim Hill to the west. The valley falls away to the north and faces into the rising ground at the east and west. The portal tomb is orientated N-S with the entrance at the south and consists of 2 capstones resting on a pair of portals, behind which are a pair of side stones. The back of the chamber is not visible. The main capstone is 2.75m square and is 1.2m in depth at the front, tapering to 0.5m at the back. The 2nd capstone is 1.4m in length,1.25m in width and 0.3m in depth. The west portal is 1.4m in height and the east 1.1m in height. The adjacent field boundary which runs E-W may contain cairn material. It was recorded that there are 2 corbels at the rear and that the capstone has at least 10 cup-marks. |
