KILLADANGAN STONE ROW |
The stone row consists of four stones aligned roughly NNE-SSW. The stones increase in height from the northern end to the southern end. The stones are in alignment with a small niche in the eastern shoulder of Croagh Patrick. At about 1.50 pm on December 21st, the winter solstice, the sun dips into this little niche in the mountain. At this point, the sun is directly in line with the row of stones, before disappearing shortly afterwards behind the mountain. The first stone at the NNE end is 0.45m in height, 0.80m in width & 0.35m in depth. The second of five stones, is 0.40m from the last and is 1m in height, 1m in width & 0.60m in depth. There is a gap of 0.70m between the second and the third stone. The third stone is 1m in height, 1m in width & 0.90m in depth. The fourth stone, which is 1m from the last, is split. It is 1.2m in height, 1m in width & 0.70m in depth. The prostrate stone lies 0.20m from the last and is 0.90m x 0.50m x 0.40m. It has been suggested this may have been part of the row. The row stands in the western quadrant of the earthen enclosure. |
