Central Torre Monument |
After the anthropomorphic period around 1200 B.C., construction of building of large circular monuments, the ‘torre’ began. These turriform constructions are at the root of the ‘Turrichju’ designation given to the site. Some fragments of broken statue-menhirs were used as construction material to build these monuments. The fragments of statue-menhirs uncovered during the excavations are to be seen outside the monument. A few tiered steps enable the visitor to pass outside from th chamber. Leaning against the monument are statue-menhirs Filitosa VIII, XI, VII, IX, X, XIII. Behind the monument is statue-menhir VI. Filitosa has two of these Torre, in the centre and on the Western side. The Torrean monuments of Filitosa were not only a refuge or a place of worship; they were also used as warehouses for food supplies or weapons, or as an observation site. |
