Pila-Canale Statue-Menhir |
In 1932, Mr. Pancrace Feliciaggi of Pila Canale, owner of a vineyard here in Zippitoli, U Cantonu, found two monoliths inclined at 45 degrees and covered with shapes. He dug down to the base, where he found at a depth of two meters, an organic soil with charcoal; Intrigued by these worked stones and sculptures, Feliciaggi tried to raise the large monoliths, but as a result of a bad manoeuvre, it broke in two. Although the human attributes; eyes, mouth, spine and shoulder blades are fading, U Cantonu is no less an example of the unique character of the islands megalithic past, which covers a period from the final Neolithic until the end of the Bronze Age. |
